In the USA, there is a family of idioms “eat your words”, “eat dirt”, “eat your hat”, and “eat your shoes” which mean the same thing. In the UK, people usually say “eat your humble pie” which will also mean the same thing. “Eating crow” is humiliation by having been proved wrong after taking a strong position. Being proved wrong and swallowing your pride in admitting it, may be as difficult as swallowing this foul tasting bird which was said to be unfit for eating in the Book of Leviticus, chapter 11, along with buzzards and rats. During the middle ages in the West, it was their culture to consider these to be not fit for eating. Thus it was an act of humiliation to have to been forced to eat it. A similar British idiom is to “ eat humble pie.” "Umbles" were the intestines, offal and other less valued meats of a deer. They were served to those of lesser class namely commoners. "Pie" is also an antiquated term for the European Magpie, a type of crow.
미국에서는 “자신의 실수를 인정하라” 를 표현할때, 무엇을 먹으라고 합니다. “네 말을 먹어라”, “먼지를 먹어라”, “모자를 먹어라”, “네 신발을 먹어라” 등은 “까마귀를 먹어라”와 같이 쓰입니다. 영국에서는 이를 “곱창 파이를 먹어라” 고 말하기도 합니다. “까마귀를 먹어라”는 말은 본인의 강한 주장이 틀리고, 이것이 공공연이 증명되어 이로 인해 체면을 구기게 될때 사용됩니다. 이렇게 자신의 잘못을 다른 사람 앞에서 시인해야 하는것은 먹지 말아야 되는 음식을 먹는 것처럼 어려운 일입니다. 특히 성경의 구약 레위기 11장에서 말똥 가리, 쥐, 까마귀는 먹지 말라고 했습니다. 서양 중세 시대 사람들은 까마귀를 먹지 않는 음식으로 여겨왔습니다. 이렇게 금기시 되는 음식을 먹어야 하는 것만큼 자기 잘못을 인정하는것이 수치스러웠다는 것입니다. 영국에서 쓰인 “험블 파이”는 “엄블”에서 온 말로 사슴의 내장, 찌꺼기 부분을 말합니다. 이것은 낮은 신분의 가난한 사람들이 먹었던 음식입니다. 또한 “ 파이”라는 말은 유럽의 까마귀의 일종인 “Magpie”에서 유래된 것입니다.
Dialogue One:
Paul: Are you sure you’re right about it? If you’re wrong, you’ll have to eat crow.
네가 정말 옳다는거냐, 만약 네가틀리면 수치스러울거야
Young: I know I’ll have to eat crow, but all the data support this conclusion.
만일 내가 틀리면 그 댓가를 치뤄야 겠지, 그러나 모든 정황이 내가 맞다고 하고 있어.
Paul: I just don’t want to see you eating your shoe in front of the whole Academy.
네 친구들 앞에서 망신을 당하는 것을 보고 싶지는 않아.
Young: Thanks, Paul, but don’t worry, I’ve eaten much worse.
고맙지만 내걱정은 하지마, 옛날에는 더 큰 일도 당했었어
Paul: Worse than eating crow?
아주 바닥으로 떨어 졌었니?
Dialogue Two:
Paul: Young, it’s time to eat crow.
영,이제 네가 잘못을 인정할때가 왔어.
Young: Alright, when you’re right, you’re right. I guess I’ll just have to eat crow.
그래 네말이 맞구나, 알았어. 내가 잘못했다.
Paul: If you weren’t so cocky, you wouldn’t be eating crow right now.
네가 그렇게 우기지만 않았어도, 그냥 넘어 갔을텐데.
Young: Paul, I’ll eat crow, but don’t push it. People can make a mistake.
폴 네가 이겼어, 이제 됐지. 사람이라면 실수를 할 수있어.
Paul: After eating a few crows, you’ll learn.
이번 한번으로 끝나면 다행이지.
Dialogue Three:
Paul: While you’re eating crow, hope you can see your mistakes.
네가 반성하는 한다면, 네 잘못을 알겠지.
Young: Paul, do you know what’s worse than eating crow?
폴, 잘못을 인정하는 것 보다 더 힘든 것이 무엇인지 아니?
Paul: What can possibly be worse than eating crow ?
이런 망신살당하는 것 보다 더 힘든게 있을까?
Young: Listening to you rubbing it in. I guess you’ve never eaten your word.
그건 바로 네가 나를 비웃는 거야. 너는 항상 완벽하지
Paul: Oh, stop crying and eat crow.
오, 그만 하고 입 다물어.
