Birds of a feather flock together

 Meaning: Those of similar taste congregate in groups.                                                                                          

                   처지가 같은 사람끼리 살아간다.  같은 깃털을 가진 새끼리 같이 모인다.

Origin: This proverb* has been in use since at least the mid 16th century. The phrase also appears in Benjamin Jowett's 1856 translation of Plato's Republic. The original Greek text at 380BC already show the proverb in use.  Plato's work would be a much earlier reference to it.  Ἀεὶ κολοιὸς παρὰ κολοιῷ ἱζάνει- "A jackdaw is always found near a jackdaw" What appears in Jowett's version is:  Men of my age flock together; we are birds of a feather, as the old proverb says. Also in nature, birds of a single species do in fact frequently form flocks. This tactic gives them safety in number.  이속담은 16세기때 부터 쓰여진증거가 있지만 , 그훨씬 이전 고대 그리스 시대부터내려온속담으로알려져 있다.  고대 그리스어로는 “까마귀 옆에는 꼭 까마귀가 있다” (Ἀεὶ κολοιὸς παρὰ κολοιῷ ἱζάνει) 라고 표현했다. 실제로 새들이 자연에서 떼를 지어 서식하고있다. 다수가 모임으로써 생존해나 갈수 있었다. 이 말은 주로 악한 사람 주변에는 악인들이 모인다는 것이다. 이렇게 대부분 나쁜 의미로 쓰이지만, 같은 처지에 있는 사람들이 유사한 행동을 할때 사용되는말이기도하다.  이글의 제목인 “Birds of a feather… “ 에서 쓰이고 있는 “a” 는 “한 종류의 깃털 ” 로 동일한 종류의 새들을 뜻한다.

Sample Dialogue A:        Paul)  MTA had another scandal. How many corrupt managers do they                                                                                                                         have?

                                           교통국에서 또 스캔들이 터졌어. 도대체 몇이나 부정을 저지른거야?

                                        Young) Looks like everyone there. Birds of a feather flock together.

                                                다 똑같아. 끼리 끼리 해먹었어.

                                            Paul) I don’t understand how can they hire a convict?

                                                어떻게 전과자를 고용했는 지 이해 할 수가 없어

                                         Young) That is because birds of a feather flock together.

                                                그러니까 초록이 동색이지.

          

Dialogue B:                  Young) Look at the cars on the parking lot, they are all foreign.

                                              이 주차장을 봐. 다 외제차들이야.

                                             Paul) What do you expect, it’s Easthampton. Birds of a feather flock together.

                                                이스트 햄튼이 이렇지 뭐. 끼리 끼리 모이쟎아.

                                         Young) Let’s not go, we don’t belong here. Birds of a feather flock together.

                                                그냥 가자, 여기는 편치가 않다. 끼리 끼리 살아야지.

                                            Paul) Come on, I went to school with these guys. Birds of feather flock together.

                                                그러지 말고가자. 나도 같은 학교 나왔어. 나도 한 편일 수 있어.
