On the rope

Meaning:  Doing something very badly and likely to fail. Whatever the situation and circumstances maybe, it is the condition of just surviving without hope of relief. It describes the last moments before its fall.  For example, “Libya’s  regime  is on the ropes.”

의미 : 너무 못해서  실패 할 일을 하는 것. 주변 환경과 상황에 상관없이 , 좋아지리라는 희망없이 그저 생존하는 상태입니다.  그것은 쓰러지기  전의 마지막 순간을 말합니다. 예를 들면, "리비아의 정권은 로프에 있습니다."

Origin:  Boxing term. From the idea of a weakened prize fighter who leans against the ropes that surrounds the modern boxing ring.

기원: 복싱 용어. 현대의권투 링을 둘러싸고 있는 로프에 기대어 있는 지친 권투 선수를 말합니다.

Sample Dialogue One:

   Paul)  Did you see the headlines this morning? Khadafy is really on the ropes.

            오늘 아침 주요 뉴스를 봤니? 카다피는 이제 정말 끝났나봐.                

   Young) It looks like he reached the end of his ropes*.

               그는 갈때까지 갔어.

   Paul) When your citizens starts beating your army, you can say he’s on the ropes.

            자기 시민들이 자신의 군대와 충돌하기 시작하면, 그 지도자는 끝났지.

  Young)  The people in Libya will finally be free from being on the ropes under his dictatorship.

             리비아 사람들은 이제 가다피의 독재하의 피폐된 삶으로 부터 벗어날거야.

Sample Dialogue Two:

  Paul)   Wall Street is really on the ropes.

             월 스트리트는 정말 안되겠어.

  Young)     It is the people who are on the ropes, the market lost all its gain since 2008.

                 2008년부터 모았던 모든 것을 잃은 사람들은 실의에 빠졌어.

  Paul)  Without creating jobs in next 12 month, President Obama is on the ropes too.

          다음 12개월전까지 새로 일자리를 만들지 못하면, 오바마 대통령도 힘들거야.

 Young)    With his popularity at 39%, I say he’s already on the ropes.

              39%의 지지율로는 이미 힘들다고 봐야지.
