A chain is only strong as its weakest link

Meaning: Any group is only as strong or powerful as its weakest member. A group of associates is only as strong as its laziest or most inexperienced member. This expression is often used to justify teamwork. There is no point to being selfish because their failure will soon be the failure for the group. Only by supporting the weakest member to do better, a group can win as one. 어떤 그룹은 제일 약한 구성원 만큼 강하게 힘을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 여럿이 모인 그룹은 그중 가장 게으르거나 미숙한 사람 만큼 강할 수 있다는 이 표현은 종종 팀워크를 정당화하는 데 사용됩니다. 혼자만 잘 하는 것은 의미가 없습니다. 약한 자들의  실패는 곧 그룹 전체를 실패하게 하기 때문입니다.오로지 가장 약한 구성원을 지원하는 방법으로 하나로 뭉쳐야 그룹은 이길 수 있습니다.


Origin: A proverb. One of the oldest recorded phrase is Thomas Reid's Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man, 1786, included this line: "In every chain of reasoning, the evidence of the last conclusion can be no greater than that of the weakest link of the chain, whatever may be the strength of the rest." 
기원: 잠언. 1786년 Thomas Reid가 쓴 가장 오래된 글 가운데 하나인 "인간의 지적인 힘에 대한 에세이"에 보면 이런 구절이 있습니다. "  추론의 모든 체인에서  마지막 결론의 증거는 어떤 체인의 가장 약한 부분보다 더 강할  수 없습니다. 아무리그 나머지가 강해도 그렇습니다.

On the rope

Meaning:  Doing something very badly and likely to fail. Whatever the situation and circumstances maybe, it is the condition of just surviving without hope of relief. It describes the last moments before its fall.  For example, “Libya’s  regime  is on the ropes.”

의미 : 너무 못해서  실패 할 일을 하는 것. 주변 환경과 상황에 상관없이 , 좋아지리라는 희망없이 그저 생존하는 상태입니다.  그것은 쓰러지기  전의 마지막 순간을 말합니다. 예를 들면, "리비아의 정권은 로프에 있습니다."

Origin:  Boxing term. From the idea of a weakened prize fighter who leans against the ropes that surrounds the modern boxing ring.

기원: 복싱 용어. 현대의권투 링을 둘러싸고 있는 로프에 기대어 있는 지친 권투 선수를 말합니다.

   Paul)  Did you see the headlines this morning? Khadafy is really on the ropes.

In cold blood

Meaning:  Acting with remorseless ruthlessness. Like a (cold-blooded) reptile, to act cruelly, without humanity,                       involving killing, like the Holocaust during World War 2.   When you do something in “cold blood” you do it                      without being  emotionally involved; in other words, you are detached. The murder is thought of in advance                        and the plans are executed in a ruthless manner, without the display of any emotion. Subject act like a cold-                       blooded animal. 무자비하고  잔인한 행위.(냉혈) 파충류와 마찬가지로, 인간이 할 수없는 잔인한 행동. 제 2 차 세계 대전 중 유대인 대학살과 같은 살인.  감정에 구애 받지 않고 다른 말로하면, 제 3자의 "냉혈한”으로 저지르는 행동. 살인 사건을 사전에 구상하고,  그리고 계획은 어떤 감정의 표시없이 냉혈 적인 동물이 할 수 있는  무자비한 방식으로 실행됩니다.

Origin:  Unknown, but likely from French, “sang froid” meaning cold blood.  During the medieval times, many  physiologists believed that the Blood actually boiled within the body when  a person grew excited and that it  grew cold when someone was calm or  detached.  The term “hot-blooded” and    in cold blood' remains as common as it was back in the late 16^th century.  Mankind has always regarded  calculated killing in cold blood as something less than human."  We still have a set of phrases in the language that  reflect this, such as his blood boiled or in the heat of passion,                  which contrast with others that describe a person  whose blood is cold or cool, so detached or uninvolved. So, an action that was carried out without excitement or emotional involvement was said to have been taken  when the blood was cold.
