A diamond in the rough

Meaning: Someone who is good heart but lacking in social graces and connections. 심성은 좋지만 좋지 않은 환경에 있는 사람,
배경과 운이 따르면 잘 풀릴 수 있는 사람. "진흙속의 진주"

This term is often used to describe people on the edge of good society. Someone who has great potential and is good at heart, but comes from tough neighborhood. The phrase is clearly a metaphor for the  original unpolished state of diamonds especially those that have the potential to become high quality jewels. It is more commonly expressed in the form 'rough diamond'. The first recorded use in print is in John Fletcher's A Wife for a Month, 1624:  "She is very honest, and will be as hard to cut as a rough diamond."
이 말은 불우한 환경에서 자란 사람에 대해 쓰였읍니다. 본인은 진취적이고 진실하지만, 배경이 좋지 않은 사람입니다. 다이아몬드의 가치는 얼마나 잘 다듬었나에 의해 좌우되죠?  마찬가지로 사람도 유익한 기회가 주어지면그 가치를 발휘할 수 있다는 것입니다.  이말은 1624년 존 플래쳐의 '이달의 아내'에서 처음 쓰였습니다. "그녀는 진실하지만, 그녀를 바꾸기가, 원석을 다듬는 것처럼 힘들것이다."

대화 연습

Paul: Are you sure about her?
       그 여자 정말 괜챦니?
Young: I met her in our after school program, she is a diamond in the rough.
          방과 후 프로 그램에서 만났어, 그녀는 진흙속의 진주같아. 
Paul: She may be a rough diamond. But you don't know anything about her.
         아무리 그렇다 해도 너는 그녀에대해 잘 모르쟎아.
Young: I asked through the grave vine,* Jack vouched for her.
            내가 알아봤어, 잭이 말하길  괜챦은 사람이래.   
Paul: Did he say she's a rough diamond too?
          잭 역시 그녀가 진흙속의 진주라고 하니?
Young: Yes,  he said she just needs a chance.
           응, 잭이그녀에게는 기회만 필요하다고 했어.

Paul: Who invited her to dinner? She's a rough diamond.
      누가 그녀를 초대했니? 진흙속의 진주말이야.
Young: At least she's a real, even if a diamond in the rough.
        아직은 진흙속의 진주지만, 그녀는 진실한 사람이야.
Paul: But she's out of her waters, she looks so awkward.
         그렇지만 여기는 어울리지 않아, 너무 어색해 하쟎아.
Young: Just because she's from other side of the track,** it doesn't mean she's not nice.
          그저 '달동네'에서살뿐이야, 좋은사람이야.
Paul: Well, you're right, this side of the track is full of snakes.
         맞어, 강남은 나쁜사람들로 우굴거리고 있어.

Paul: You were a diamond in the rough, too, once.
        너도 한때는  진흙속의진주였지.
Young: Who you calling a rough diamond?
        너 누구보고 진흙속의 진주래?
Paul: You. Don't you remember where we come from?
       바로 너. 우리가 어디에서 왔는지 잊었니?
Young: Yes, I do, that's why I work so hard, and she needs too.
          아니, 기억하고 있어,그래서 내가 이렇게 열심히 일하쟎니, 그녀도 별수 없겠지.
Paul: She's a diamond in the rough, she'll shine someday.
       그녀도 진흙속의 진주니까 언제가는 잘될꺼야.
